Wood smoke in the Dandenong Ranges

Less smoke starts with dry wood and a clean flue. A neighbour's smoke is a matter for the council.

The heater

EPA Victoria points to three Australian standards: AS 4012 for a heater's output and efficiency, AS 4013 for its emissions, and AS 2918 for installation. Its advice is a heater that meets the standards, installed by a professional. Knox council asks for a heater certified to AS 4012 and 4013, installed by a licensed person under the Building Act.

Owners also carry the general environmental duty: run the heater so it makes as little smoke as it reasonably can.

Checked 25 October 2026 against EPA Victoria: manage smoke from wood heaters, Knox City Council: wood heaters and woodsmoke and EPA Victoria: remember where smoke goes (30 June 2025).

Less smoke

Dry, seasoned, untreated hardwood, a clean flue before winter, and nothing painted or treated in the firebox. The seasoning guide has the detail.

A neighbour's smoke

EPA says smoke from a neighbour's heater goes to the local council, not to EPA. Knox and Cardinia both say to talk to the neighbour first.

What's the job?

How much you want, whether it should be split small for the heater, and how close a truck can get to where it's stacked.

A photo of the driveway and where the wood will be stacked helps with the quote.
