Firewood in Kilsyth South

Kilsyth South is all Maroondah, nearly half of it green wedge, and its bushland is the only place the Kilsyth South Spider Orchid grows.

Maroondah's burning rules

All of Kilsyth South is in the City of Maroondah. There, burning off is allowed only on land of more than 1 hectare, with a permit, and backyard incinerators have been banned since 1995. Nearly half the suburb is green wedge, so some properties may be big enough for a permit; a typical house block is not. EPA Victoria sends complaints about a neighbour's chimney smoke to the local council.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Vicmap Planning, the state's zone and overlay maps (DataVic), measured across the suburb, Maroondah City Council: burning off and EPA Victoria: manage smoke from wood heaters.

The orchid's bushland

The suburb's bushland is the only place the Kilsyth South Spider Orchid is found. Firewood can be collected only in designated State forest areas, and not in bushland reserves. This spring's are around Powelltown, Warburton and Wesburn; the collecting guide has the dates.

Little bushfire overlay

The Bushfire Management Overlay barely reaches Kilsyth South, and none of its house blocks. CFA's summer advice holds anyway: keep the woodpile away from the house in fire season. The fire season guide has the Total Fire Ban rules for fire pits.

Knox, with a Permit to Burn, and the bushfire overlay over about half its house blocks.

What's the job?

How much you want, whether it should be split small for the heater, and how close a truck can get to where it's stacked.

A photo of the driveway and where the wood will be stacked helps with the quote.
