Firewood in Kilsyth
Kilsyth grew on cleared orchard land and sits mostly outside the bushfire overlay. The council line through it, Yarra Ranges or Maroondah, is what changes the rules.

From orchards to the Canterbury Road works
Kilsyth lies mostly on cleared land that was once orchards. Today about two fifths of it is houses and close to a fifth is industrial, most of it the strip along Canterbury Road; the green wedge takes up about a quarter. The Bushfire Management Overlay touches only about a twentieth of the suburb and almost none of its house blocks.
CFA's summer advice still applies on a town block: keep the woodpile away from the house in fire season, because it can trap embers. For drying, EPA Victoria's advice is at least 8 months under cover, with air moving through the stack.

Two councils
Most of Kilsyth is in Yarra Ranges and about an eighth is in Maroondah. Your address decides which rules you follow.
In Yarra Ranges, each address falls in an urban, bushland or rural burning category, and the council's burning-off page looks it up. Smoke questions go to the council on 1300 368 333.
In Maroondah, burning off is allowed only on land of more than 1 hectare, with a permit, and backyard incinerators have been banned since 1995. EPA Victoria sends neighbour smoke complaints to the local council.

What goes in the heater
With houses close together, what goes in the firebox matters to the street. EPA Victoria says to burn only dry, seasoned, untreated hardwood: no painted or treated timber, and no green-coloured pine. The smoke guide has the rest.
