Firewood in Menzies Creek

Menzies Creek is split between two councils, Yarra Ranges and Cardinia, and the burning rules change at the line.

We connect you with a local firewood supplier who works in the hills.

Two councils, one town

Menzies Creek is named after James Menzies, a gold digger who worked the area in the 1860s. Its station opened with the Gembrook line in 1900. The town was once in the old Shire of Sherbrooke. It is now split between Yarra Ranges, with a little over half the area, and Cardinia, with the rest. Your address decides which council's rules apply.

On the Yarra Ranges side, each address has an urban, bushland or rural burning category, and the council's page looks it up. Heater smoke goes to the council on 1300 368 333. On the Cardinia side, burning off is allowed only to reduce bushfire fuel, and a smoky neighbour is something to raise with them first and the council second.

Rural blocks under the overlay

The planning map shows no residential zone in Menzies Creek. Half is green wedge land and about a third Rural Conservation. The Bushfire Management Overlay covers most of it, and CFA's woodpile advice applies: keep the stack at least 10 m from the house. The erosion overlay covers about a third, so check the drive before the truck comes.

No collecting on the Cardinia side

There are no firewood collection areas anywhere in Cardinia. This spring's are all State forest areas in the Yarra district, around Powelltown and Warburton. The collecting guide has the seasons and the limits, and the buying guide covers what a delivered load should come with.

What's the job?

How much you want, whether it should be split small for the heater, and how close a truck can get to where it's stacked.

A photo of the driveway and where the wood will be stacked helps with the quote.
