Firewood in Clematis
Clematis lost its sawmills when the timber ran out, but its station still loads wood for Puffing Billy.

After the sawmills
Clematis was subdivided in 1902 as Paradise Valley, and the hotel still carries the name. The area declined after the Second World War, when the local timber ran out and many sawmills closed. Timber still passes through: the loop siding at Clematis station is used mainly for loading wood for Puffing Billy's locomotives.

Bush blocks under the overlay
About three quarters of Clematis is Rural Conservation Zone, and the Bushfire Management Overlay covers all of it. Blocks here are mostly large enough to keep a woodpile the 10 m from the house that CFA advises, so the work is in choosing the spot before a load is tipped.
The house blocks also carry a Vegetation Protection Overlay. Native wood from private land generally needs a council permit, according to the Conservation Regulator, so ask Cardinia before cutting a tree up for the heater.

Cardinia's rules
Almost all of Clematis is in Cardinia Shire, which allows burning only to reduce bushfire fuel. A neighbour's chimney smoke is something to raise with them first, then with the council. The wood smoke guide covers the heater side.
