Firewood in Emerald
Emerald is split between two councils, with Cardinia Reservoir inside its boundary. Which side of the line you are on decides the burning and smoke rules.

Which council you are in
Most of Emerald is in Cardinia Shire, and a small part is in Yarra Ranges. The rules for burning off and for smoke differ between the two, so check your address before you rely on either.
Cardinia allows burning only to reduce bushfire fuel. For a neighbour's smoky chimney, it asks you to talk to them first and then contact the council. Yarra Ranges sorts addresses into urban, bushland and rural burning categories, with an address lookup on its burning-off page, and takes smoke complaints on 1300 368 333.

A town around a reservoir
Cardinia Reservoir lies entirely inside Emerald, south of the township, and public utility land, the reservoir's, takes up more than half the suburb's area on the planning maps. The houses sit in a much smaller share: low density blocks, a fifth or so of rural conservation land, and only a little ordinary town residential.
The Bushfire Management Overlay covers almost all of Emerald and every one of its house blocks. CFA's advice is to keep woodpiles at least 10 m from the house, so on a bush block the winter delivery wants a spot out past that line before summer.

Wood off your own block
Nearly every house block in Emerald also carries a Vegetation Protection Overlay. The Conservation Regulator says native wood taken from private land generally needs a council permit, so ask the council before a fallen or felled tree becomes next year's firewood. Whatever its source, green wood needs months under cover before it burns cleanly; the drying guide has the detail.

Collecting your own
There are no firewood collection areas in Cardinia Shire. This spring's are all State forest in the Yarra district, around Powelltown, Warburton and Wesburn. Cardinia Reservoir Park and the parks around Emerald Lake aren't collection areas. Seasons and limits are in the collecting guide.

Past Emerald
- Clematis, Avonsleigh and Cockatoo
- Cardinia, but for a sliver of Clematis, and nearly all under the bushfire overlay.
- Menzies Creek
- Split between Cardinia and Yarra Ranges, like Emerald but closer to half and half.
- Macclesfield
- Yarra Ranges, and mostly farmland rather than house blocks.
