Firewood in Silvan
Silvan is berry farms, orchards and a reservoir, with almost no town blocks. It is also a place where the bushfire overlay stops short of covering everything.

Orchards, berries and a reservoir
Silvan sits halfway between Belgrave and Lilydale. It was surveyed in 1868 as Wandin Yallock South and renamed in 1913. Its soils suit fruit, vegetables and flowers, and the pick-your-own farms and the spring tulip festival are what most visitors know it for. Silvan Reservoir was commissioned in 1917 and finished in 1932.
On the planning map about two thirds of the locality is green wedge farmland and about a third is public utility land. Less than one per cent is zoned for town houses, so most homes here are on farm blocks with room for a stack.

Where the overlay stops
The Bushfire Management Overlay covers about two thirds of Silvan, and a little under half of the small town-residential area. Unlike Belgrave or Upwey, some Silvan addresses are outside it. CFA's woodpile advice holds either way: keep the stack at least 10 m from the house, and away from the walls in summer, when it can catch embers. The fire season guide covers the Total Fire Ban rules.

Collecting your own
Collecting is allowed only in State forest collection areas, only from 1 March to 30 June and 1 September to 30 November, and only fallen wood. This spring's areas are all around Powelltown, Warburton, Wesburn, McMahons Creek and Toolangi. Forest Fire Management says most firewood is green and needs 8 to 12 months to dry. The collecting guide has the limits.

Burning off farm prunings
Orchard and garden prunings are a Yarra Ranges Council matter. The council sorts each address into an urban, bushland or rural burning category with its own days and permits, and its burning-off page has the lookup. A neighbour's smoke can be reported to the council on 1300 368 333.
