Firewood in Monbulk

Monbulk is farm and nursery country with more rain than Melbourne, which makes dry storage the first thing to sort out.

Ten-acre farms to nurseries

Monbulk began in 1893 as a village settlement of 10-acre farms, and its soils made it fruit, vegetable and flower country. The jam co-operative started in 1897 and its factory closed in 1991. At the 2016 census, nursery work and cut flowers employed more residents than any other industry, and about three quarters of the land is green wedge on the planning map. On most of these blocks the question is less whether a load fits than where the stack should sit.

Wetter than Melbourne

Monbulk gets more rain on average than Melbourne. Wood left in the open takes it up, so the stack needs a roof and air moving through it. EPA Victoria's advice is to store firewood for at least 8 months, covered, before it goes in the heater. Buying in autumn for the following winter gives the wood that time. The drying guide goes into it.

In town and out of it

The town itself is Low Density Residential, and the Bushfire Management Overlay covers every one of those blocks. Over the whole locality it covers about four fifths. CFA advises keeping woodpiles at least 10 m from the house, since a stack against the wall in summer catches embers. Monbulk has burned before: the primary school was lost to fire in 1913, and fire came through again in 1944.

The Erosion Management Overlay touches only about a sixth of Monbulk, far less than in Belgrave or Selby, and its soils are described as well drained and hard to erode. Fewer drives are steep enough to stop a truck, but say where the wood should go and whether a truck can turn when you ask for a quote.

Smoke and burning off

Yarra Ranges Council handles both. Burning-off days depend on whether your address is in the urban, bushland or rural category, which the council's page looks up for you. Smoke from a neighbour's heater goes to the council on 1300 368 333.

Monbulk's borders

Silvan and Macclesfield
More farmland to the north and east, under the same council.
Olinda, Kallista and The Patch
Toward the forest, to the west and south. More than half of Olinda is park or reserve on the planning map, and no firewood may be collected in national parks or bushland reserves.

What's the job?

How much you want, whether it should be split small for the heater, and how close a truck can get to where it's stacked.

A photo of the driveway and where the wood will be stacked helps with the quote.
