Rural land, not town blocks

Avonsleigh took its name from a guest house owned by J.W. Wright, and its post office opened in 1902 as Koenig's. Today it is rural on the planning maps: about half is Rural Conservation Zone and two fifths Green Wedge, with only a small pocket of low density house blocks.

The woodpile in fire season

The Bushfire Management Overlay covers most of Avonsleigh and all of its house blocks. CFA advises keeping woodpiles at least 10 m from the house, and warns that a pile close by in summer catches embers. With room to spare, the stack can sit well clear.

Burning and smoke in Cardinia

Avonsleigh is all Cardinia Shire. The council allows burning only to reduce bushfire fuel, and for heater smoke it asks neighbours to talk first and come to the council after. There are no firewood collection areas anywhere in Cardinia; the collecting guide lists where to go instead.
