Firewood in Macclesfield

Macclesfield is flower farms and potato paddocks, with no residential zoning at all. A load of firewood has room to land here, but it needs a dry place to sit.

We connect you with a local firewood supplier who works in the hills.

Farm country

Gold was found in Macclesfield Creek in 1865, and mining came and went quickly. The soil is rich and grows flowers and potatoes, and the paddocks carry goats and alpacas. On the planning maps nearly nine tenths of Macclesfield is Green Wedge, and none of it is zoned residential.

A delivery here goes to a farm or a rural lot, so space is rarely the problem. Somewhere dry to put the wood is. Tell the supplier where it is to be tipped. A shed with air moving through it suits; EPA Victoria's advice is to store wood covered, with air flow, for at least 8 months before burning.

Wood from your own land

Before a fallen tree on the property goes into the heater, check with the council. The Conservation Regulator says native wood taken from private land generally needs a council permit, and Macclesfield is all Yarra Ranges, so that is the council to ask.

Overlay and burning

The Bushfire Management Overlay covers about three fifths of Macclesfield, less than in Emerald or Cockatoo. Where it applies or not, CFA's advice is the same: keep woodpiles at least 10 m from the house.

Yarra Ranges gives each address an urban, bushland or rural burning category, and the days and permits differ. Look your address up on the council's burning-off page before lighting anything. Smoke complaints go to the council on 1300 368 333.

Collecting

This spring's firewood collection areas are all State forest in the Yarra district, around Wesburn and Warburton. They are open only in two seasons a year; the collecting guide has the dates and limits.

What's the job?

How much you want, whether it should be split small for the heater, and how close a truck can get to where it's stacked.

A photo of the driveway and where the wood will be stacked helps with the quote.
