Firewood in Cockatoo
Cockatoo lost more than 300 buildings on Ash Wednesday. Where the winter woodpile sits is a fire question here before it is a convenience one.

A town that remembers Ash Wednesday
Cockatoo was one of the worst-hit towns in the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires. More than 300 buildings were lost and six people died. The former kindergarten on McBride Street has housed the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre since 2017.
Every house block in Cockatoo is under the Bushfire Management Overlay, as is most of the land around it. A woodpile is fuel. CFA's advice is to keep it at least 10 m from the house, and in summer a stack close to the house is an ember trap. The fire-season guide covers Total Fire Ban days and the Fire Danger Period.

From timber-getting to buying in
Timber-getting was Cockatoo's main work after settlement in the 1870s, helped along by the narrow-gauge line to Gembrook, which opened in 1900 and now runs as Puffing Billy. Commercial native timber harvesting in Victoria ended on 1 January 2024, and the Conservation Regulator's advice is to buy from a wholesaler, a wood lot or private land with permission, with a receipt showing a business name and ABN. The buying guide has the rest.

Not from Wright Forest
Wright Forest, north-west of the town, is a 161 ha fauna sanctuary run by Parks Victoria. Fallen wood there stays where it is: collecting is allowed only in designated State forest areas, and there are none in Cardinia Shire. This spring's are all over in the Yarra district, around Powelltown and Warburton.

Cardinia's rules
Cockatoo is all Cardinia Shire. Burning is allowed only to reduce bushfire fuel. For heater smoke from next door, the council asks you to talk to the neighbour first and then contact it.

Out from Cockatoo
- Emerald, Avonsleigh and Gembrook
- The same shire, and the bushfire overlay over nearly all of each.
- Nangana
- Cardinia as well, but almost entirely farmland, with the overlay over less of it.
- Macclesfield
- Yarra Ranges, with burning categories looked up by address.
