Firewood in Ferntree Gully
Ferntree Gully is mostly suburban streets, with the bushfire overlay over less than a tenth of it. Here the questions are where a load fits and where the smoke goes.

A suburb at the foot of the ranges
Ferntree Gully had 27,398 people at the 2021 census, and about two thirds of its land is ordinary residential streets, including estates like Mountain Gate and Fairhills that opened in 1959. The Bushfire Management Overlay covers under a tenth of the suburb. Most of Ferntree Gully is low fire risk, but the areas near the national park on its eastern boundary are high risk.
If your street is one of those, CFA's landscaping guide puts woodpiles at least 10 m from the house. Elsewhere CFA still says to keep woodpiles away from the house, because in summer a woodpile is an ember trap.

Wood on a town block
On a suburban block the question is often how much will fit. Firewood has to be sold by weight, by volume or by the lot, and a load sold by stacked volume in cubic metres is the easiest to plan a space for. The buying guide explains the three.
The stack still needs a cover and air moving through it. EPA Victoria's advice is at least 8 months under cover before the wood is burnt.

Knox's heater rules
All of Ferntree Gully is in Knox. The council wants wood heaters certified to AS 4012 and AS 4013 and installed by a licensed person, and asks that offcuts, fencing materials and sleepers aren't burnt. With houses close together, smoke travels. Knox's order for a smoke problem is a talk with the neighbour, then the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria, then the council on 9298 8000. The smoke guide covers the heater side.
Burning off garden waste needs a Permit to Burn, and Knox issues none for the Fire Danger Period, June, July or a Total Fire Ban day.

Towards the hills
- Upper Ferntree Gully
- Split between Knox and Yarra Ranges, with the overlay over about half of it and the 1000 Steps in national park, where collecting isn't allowed.
- Tremont
- Up the hill in Yarra Ranges, almost all of it national park, with no collecting.
