Firewood in Tremont

Tremont is 69 people living inside Dandenong Ranges National Park. The forest is all around, and none of it can go in the heater.

A handful of houses in a national park

Almost all of Tremont is inside Dandenong Ranges National Park. At the 2021 census it had 69 residents. The planning maps agree: more than nine tenths of the locality is public conservation land, with a little green wedge and the main road. The forest all round is not a source of firewood. Parks Victoria doesn't allow collecting in national parks, so the wood comes in by truck or from State forest further east.

Where the stack goes

Tremont was hit by the Dandenong Ranges fires of January 1997. The Bushfire Management Overlay covers the whole locality, and with forest on every side, CFA's landscaping guide counts for a lot: woodpiles at least 10 m from the house. On a Total Fire Ban day a fire pit or brazier can't be lit in the open air.

Council

Tremont is in Yarra Ranges. The council sets burning-off days and permits by address, and takes smoke complaints on 1300 368 333.

Out of the park

Ferny Creek, Sassafras and Upwey
More homes and the same bushfire overlay. All Yarra Ranges but for a slice of Sassafras in Knox.
Upper Ferntree Gully, Ferntree Gully and The Basin
Mostly or wholly Knox, with its own heater and burning rules, and suburban streets below the range.

What's the job?

How much you want, whether it should be split small for the heater, and how close a truck can get to where it's stacked.

A photo of the driveway and where the wood will be stacked helps with the quote.
