Firewood in Kallista

Kallista was loggers' country in the 1850s. Now it is green wedge farm blocks beside Sherbrooke Forest, where the wood has to be bought, not gathered.

We connect you with a local firewood supplier who works in the hills.

Loggers, then selectors

The first white settlers here were loggers, in the 1850s. In 1867 the area became a forest reserve of about 10,700 hectares, and from 1878 parts of it were released for sale and later for selection. The post office opened around 1902 as South Sassafras, and the name changed to Kallista in 1925 to end the mix-ups with Sassafras up the road.

Farm blocks outside the growth boundary

Kallista lies outside Melbourne's Urban Growth Boundary, and the planning maps show it. About seven tenths of the locality is green wedge, and almost all the rest is public conservation land. There is no residential zone at all, so houses stand on green wedge land rather than town blocks, and there is often room for a woodshed well away from the house.

About two fifths of Kallista is under the Erosion Management Overlay. If the wood has to come down a steep track, or the truck can't turn at the top, say so when you ask for a quote.

Not every block is under the bushfire overlay

Unlike most of its neighbours on the ridge, Kallista isn't covered end to end by the Bushfire Management Overlay. It applies to about seven tenths of the locality, so check your own address on the state's planning maps. CFA's advice to keep woodpiles away from the house in summer applies either way, and its landscaping guide gives the distance as 10 m. The fire season guide has the rest.

Sherbrooke Forest is off limits

Sherbrooke Forest, next to Kallista, is part of Dandenong Ranges National Park, and firewood can't be collected there. This spring's collection areas are all in State forest in the upper Yarra, around Powelltown and Warburton.

Burning off on a rural block

Yarra Ranges puts each address into an urban, bushland or rural burning category, and the days and permits follow from that; the council's burning-off page has the lookup. Fire pits are allowed except on Total Fire Ban days, if the smoke isn't offensive. In the Fire Danger Period, CFA's conditions apply too. Smoke complaints go to the council on 1300 368 333.

What's the job?

How much you want, whether it should be split small for the heater, and how close a truck can get to where it's stacked.

A photo of the driveway and where the wood will be stacked helps with the quote.
