Firewood in Tecoma
Tecoma got its name from a railway station built for a timber mill. Today every block is under the bushfire overlay, with Sherbrooke Forest on the northern edge.

A station built for a timber mill
Tecoma had no name of its own until 1925. When a railway station was wanted for the timber mill that stood where Tecoma Primary School is now, it was named after the tecoma shrub growing nearby.
It is a small suburb, under 2 km² at about 220 m, squeezed between Belgrave and Upwey with Sherbrooke Forest on its northern edge. The forest is national park, and collecting firewood there isn't allowed.

Room for the stack
The Bushfire Management Overlay covers all of Tecoma. CFA's advice is to keep woodpiles at least 10 m from the house, and in summer a stack against the wall is an ember trap.
About two thirds of the suburb is Low Density Residential, so many blocks have the room. The few ordinary town blocks are tighter, and there a smaller load, topped up through winter, is easier to keep clear of the house. The fire-season guide covers the rest.

Steep drives
The Erosion Management Overlay covers about three fifths of Tecoma's house blocks. A truck that can't get up the drive tips at the kerb, so tell the supplier how steep it is and how far the wood has to go.

Yarra Ranges rules
Tecoma is all Yarra Ranges. The council puts every address in an urban, bushland or rural burning category, and its burning-off page has the lookup. A neighbour's smoky heater is one for the council too, on 1300 368 333. Wood that has dried under cover for at least 8 months, as EPA Victoria advises, smokes far less; the drying guide explains why.
